Black Hairstyles for Boys

Before I had kids, I thought worrying about hair was a “girl” thing. Wash days, detangling, barrettes, the fuss… I could do without.

It’s one of the reasons I wanted boys, actually. I thought they’d be carefree, easy-going, fun and provide minimal clothing and hair maintenance.

All except for the minimal hair maintenance has proven to be true so far.

Hair DEFINITELY is a thing in this house.

My oldest son has a tight curly ‘fro, my middle son has a looser ‘fro, and my youngest has a typical baby ‘fro.

There is still moaning and groaning when it’s time to do their hair every morning. You’d think my aloe vera juice was laced with acid the way they squirm around (except for the baby… he loves it).

But yet, I haven’t decided to shave their heads.

It’s the question I often receive by the time my sons are 2 years old. And I respond by saying, “I don’t know. It fits them for now. We’ll see in the future.”

Welp, it still fits them.

The issue is that their hair keeps growing out, so now I’m at a crossroads.

Do I keep letting it grow into a massive ‘fro? Do I style it? Should one of them be rocking locs?

I have no clue, but I need to make a decision pretty soon, so I can test it out during the summer.

That also had me thinking—how do you decide how your child should rock his or her hair? Is it the parent’s choice based on time and money? Or should the child get a headstart on honing their fashion sense?

This week, it’ll be my decision. I bought the EZ Detangler Brush, and I’m trying it on my boys. The experience could make me shave them bald, but we’ll see!

Let me know what you think about the hairstyle selection process in the meantime. See you Friday Monday!
