“Bye, Edges!” My Postpartum Shedding Update

0 Permalink 1

I was going to discuss another topic this week, but I’ve had a few people recently message me to tell me about their postpartum shedding or thank me for disclosing about my hair loss, so I had to call an audible.

Postpartum shedding is when your hair packs up and leaves without leaving a note after you give birth to your baby. ✌🏾

It can be extremely devastating because your hair may have been thick and lush during pregnancy, only to have it coming out by the handful months later.

Science says that you’re not really losing hair. Experts claim that your hair shedding process “stalled” while you were pregnant. Therefore, the shedding continued with retroactive payments once you gave birth.

That doesn’t explain what happened to my edges though…

No retroactive amount of shedding should have left me with naked edges.

I’ve been through this three times, and it doesn’t get any easier. I walk around with my edges looking like a chimpanzee during pregnancy. And then, I suddenly look in the mirror and realize that Bubbles abandoned me.

It’s always a shock.

“Where did my edges go? Take a little from the middle of my head; but please, Lord, not the edges!”

Some people end up with bald spots. Some people see an alarming increase in shedding. I saw my same head of hair with no edges.

A whole pizza with no crust.

Naturally, I panicked. I didn’t have time to think about it too much because I had a newborn to take care of. However, when I looked at my profile in the mirror, it was humbling.

Time heals all wounds.

I was too busy to notice when my edges came back the first time, and I don’t recall much about the second time either. So, the moral of the story is that your hair will recover in due time.

I’m impatient this third time. That’s why I started using an essential oil mix and implemented a scalp massage every night. I think it’s working, but I’ll fill you guys in on this week’s video.

In the meantime, fake it until you make it! Cover your edges or bald spot. Do a nice little comb-over effect, bringing the pieces near your hairline forward to create an illusion of edges. Heck, I wouldn’t be too mad if you even drew some realistic edges with a pencil. (Too far? Okay. Nevermind. )

All I’m saying is do what you need in order to get that confidence boost because if you look good, you feel good. And if you feel good, you do good.

I know what you’re thinking. Umm… can we see pictures of your struggleville edges? Patience, young grasshopper. That’s why you need to tune in to this Friday’s video.
