My Hair Regimen – 2019 Update

It’s been two months since my amazing silk press; but alas, my horse-drawn carriage has turned into a pumpkin. That’s not a bad thing for natural hair though.

Hair reversion is a gift and a curse. It’s a sign that your hair has no heat damage, but it also means that… your hair reverted.

I was kind of missing my kinks, so I’m glad they’re back. The most common question I get asked from those who see my hair in its natural “poofy” state is, “What do you put in your hair?”

I hesitate to answer that question because:

  1. What works for one head may not work for the other.
  2. If your hair is damaged, you need to fix that issue first.
  3. You could have the right products, and still misuse it.

I’m not trying to hoard the knowledge I gained over the years about hair care. It’s just that I know what works for my hair (and sometimes other heads that have a specific need), but I’m certainly not a guru. I just give my input. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I researched for a long time, but I’ll never act as if my hours of realizations through Google equates to some kind of certification.

I’m also very aware that some of you reading this are thinking, “Shut up and spill the beans already!” So, I shall. LOL! But remember that my regimen is just that—mine. If some products or techniques help you here and there, that’s just icing on the cake.

WASH DAY ROUTINE

How often do I wash my hair? Whenever the Spirit leads me.

As long as my scalp is in good condition, I keep it pushing. My main focus is keeping my scalp clean and healthy. Plus, I hate the “aftershock” that my hair gets after washing it. It takes a while for my moisture-protein balance to get back on track after a wash day, so I avoid it if possible.

Because I don’t use them very often, my shampoo and conditioner are not the stars of my routine. However, if you must know, I’ll walk you through my wash day.

I start by making sure my hair isn’t a matted mess. If my hair is extra tangled and mangled for some reason, I apply aloe vera juice to soften and separate the strands.

I then use Organic Root Stimulator (ORS) Creamy Aloe Shampoo followed by the ORS Replenishing Conditioner. If you wash your hair more often, I would recommend a gentler shampoo like As I Am Coconut Cowash. My deep conditioner is Silk Elements Megasilk Moisturizing Treatment. 💆🏾‍♀️

My biggest struggle is usually moisture, not necessarily protein. But when I need a little strengthening boost, ApHogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor comes to the rescue.

I section my hair to wash and condition it, and I try to gently detangle as my hair is soaked with product while in the shower.

After what seems like forever, I’m ready to style.


LEAVE-INS / MOISTURIZER ROUTINE

I believe that if you use the correct products in the shampoo and conditioning phase, you don’t need a lot of leave-in products.

If I’m keeping my hair in its kinky state, I’ll air dry with Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist Deep Conditioning sealed with some type of light oil (grapeseed, argan, jojoba, etc.) Then, I’ll put my hair in two plaits and wait for it to completely dry.

When I take it down, I may add more oil to keep the frizz at bay and seal the moisture in a bit more.

If I’m straightening my hair, I use fewer products. I may put a dab of the Aussie moisturizer on damp hair; but my main goal is to put something in my hair to guard against the heat, like Chi Silk Infusion (a little goes a long way).

Then, I’ll blow dry my hair in sections on low, stretching it with my hand to help the process. After that, I flat iron in small sections.

I straighten my hair once a year, so take that for what it’s worth. HA!


EVERYDAY ROUTINE

In between wash days, which is a majority of the time, I keep it very simple.

If my hair feels too dry, I incorporate the (liquid, oil and cream) L.O.C. moisture method. 👈🏾

I start with my trusted liquid: Hawaiian Silky Moisturizer and Sheen Spray, which is becoming harder to find at my local beauty supply stores. I follow that up with a light oil (as mentioned above) and then a cream, such as my Aussie moisturizer or Kinky Curly Knot Today.

I may add a tad more oil as a finishing touch, so I guess it’s the L.O.C.O. method when I do that.


NIGHTLY ROUTINE

Before I go to bed, I just make sure my moisture levels are correct and then braid my hair in two plaits.

I take it out in the morning, and my little wavy hair lasts for about two hours before humidity takes over. This is why my hair is usually in a tucked-away bun… never to be seen until I’m ready to wrap my hair up again.

I started adding nightly oil massages to my routine as well, so I’ll give more details about how that works in this week’s podcast.

See? I don’t do much. There are no herbal masks of the ancient creeds or horse steroids used.

I just make sure my hair has moisture and try to leave it alone as much as possible. Low manipulation is key for me. (If you’re one of those people who do the most with your natural hair, I seriously applaud you. I just don’t have the time or energy.)
