I have good news on the baby front — Jayden is sleeping through the night!!
I need a happy dance break here. And not a little “jolly jig”… I’m talking about the kind of dance that will make an old man forget about his ailments. Hit it, Papa P!
How did I do it, you ask? By using a more humane version of the cry it out method.I tried putting him in his crib and letting him cry it out before, but as you may remember, my ears were no match to his steel lungs. However, as he started getting older, I figured that he would start understanding that mommy and daddy would still be there in the morning.
It was time to put my theory to the test.
The first night was torture. I placed him in his crib and sat on the floor nearby as I waited for him to fall asleep. He looked at me as if to say, “Don’t just sit there. Get me out of this kiddie jail, lady! ” But I didn’t budge (because I’m something like a boss).
That’s when the crying all-out bawling began. After about 20 minutes of a cry that gradually turned into a weak whimper, he fell asleep.
I repeated that process for a week. The length of his cries became shorter every day.
Then, I started moving closer and closer to the door when I put him in his crib so he wouldn’t be dependent on my presence to fall asleep.
By week two, he was falling asleep by himself without me being in the room. And now, he’ll even watch me walk out and simply turn to his side and go to sleep.
But this wouldn’t be my blog if something ridiculous didn’t happen in the process.
When Jayden was first getting the hang of falling asleep on his own, he stood up in his crib after I positioned him down, and he watched me walk out of his room without saying a peep.
After about a minute, I heard a huge thud. I quickly ran back to see what had happened, but all I could see was Jayden sound asleep. Weird…
The next day, I laid him down in his crib, but stayed around to peep through his bedroom door

I remember my son at about 14-16 months being so tired he would fall asleep standing up. It was so funny. Congrats on getting your little one to sleep on his own.

Thanks, Suzanne! Sleeping while standing? Now that’s something I’d want to see. Ha!
