It’d be a wonderful narrative to say that my sons wear their hair in its full glory because I wanted them to be proud and empowered by their thick, wooly manes. That isn’t exactly how it came about, though.
I like to think of myself as a consultant of male hair. Basically, I can tell a man the head/facial hair combo that looks best on him.
Don’t believe me? Just ask my clients.
Kobe Bryant was in his heyday with his afro. Then, he cut his hair. Sure he probably broke records with his bald head, but what else did he do during that time? Retire.
Chris Webber is another example that refused to listen to me. With a ‘fro, he was at the pinnacle of his basketball career and snagged Tyra Banks. Then, he cut his hair… never to be seen again. Since the no-hair look aged him by 10 years, he went back to the rivers and the lakes that he was used to. Now, he looks like his best self again as a sports analyst.
I know what you’re thinking.
“You think all men look better with a ‘fro.”
False.
Although growing the hair out about an inch more can solve a lot of aesthetic issues, that theory doesn’t work for everyone. 🙅🏾♀️
Morris Chestnut is best bald. He looked broke with hair. Ricky wasn’t his shining moment. A clean shave and defined facial hair was his golden ticket.
Will Smith can go with the bald look, but just because something is permissible doesn’t make it beneficial. (That’s biblical!) Will can step it up many notches by keeping a low to moderate fade with a goatee. He turns into Uncle William instantly when his only facial hair is a thick mustache with no semblance of hair on his chin.
I could go on and on; but essentially, here’s how to determine what will work. Look in the mirror. Look at your “areas of improvement.” See how to either mask them or enhance another area to confuse the enemy.
If you have a big head, don’t get a low cut. Keep your hair on the bulkier side to create the illusion that your hair is the only culprit. (Why do you think I have to have big hair? LOL!)
If your face is chubby, opt for defined facial hair to create a more chiseled look.
I’m not going to give away all my secrets, but trust me—I’m a consultant of male hair.
So that’s why my boys all have curly ‘fros. I looked at their face shape, features and hair type to determine what’s best at the current moment.
My oldest has distinct brown hair (no clue where that came from) with a very tight curl pattern. It grows up and out of his head.
My second son has darker brown hair with a looser curl pattern. It grows out and down, so he probably wouldn’t look too shabby with a ponytail. LOL.
You can’t trust the baby’s hair. I’ve seen my children’s hair pattern change too many times to even predict what his will be. For now, he’s rocking a soft ‘fro, but that will turn by the time he’s a toddler. 👶🏾
I’m not bent on these hairstyles. As they grow up, and their features change, I’ll act accordingly to make sure their look is right for them.
I would love to be a mom who doesn’t have to do anything because all my sons are rocking a low fade, but that’s not my portion in life.
Again, I didn’t choose the ‘fro life. The ‘fro life chose me.
I received a few requests to share the hair routine of my boys, so I’ll be explaining that in this week’s podcast. Also, my husband finally took my consultant advice. I’ll update you all on that as well. LOL!
