What Does “Motherly” Mean Anyways?

Can't Do EverythingYou know that thing that clicks inside of you that makes you want to automatically drop all of your life dreams and start living for your child when you have a baby? Well, I don’t because that switch never really turned on for me. ๐Ÿ˜•

Don’t get me wrong. I love my son very much. He’s a great addition to my life, but that’s exactly what he isโ€”an addition.

He didn’t replace or take away from the love I have for my husband… or parents… or sister… or brothers. I still cherish those relationships, but I did have to put my son at the top of my priorities. ๐Ÿ™‚

I used to think it was abnormal that I didn’t want to drop my career aspirations, hobbies, and well… everything once he was born.

I’d look at Facebook and see all the other new moms who would constantly post updates gushing over how their child just blinked or sighed. They’d post about how motherhood is so blissful and that it’s crazy how quickly their motherly instincts kicked in. ๐Ÿ˜ This was the quote I read not too long ago:

“I now know my true calling in life is to be a mom.”

All I could remember thinking is, “Wooow. That’s great and all, but am I a horrible mom for not automatically thinking that too?”

Was I dancing in the lily fields when Jayden was born? No.. but I was still happy. Did his late-night shrills sound like music to my ears? Nope… pretty sure that was quite maddening. ๐Ÿ˜ก

And that’s a-ok.

I have no idea if those other “newbies” are just bluffing for Facebook, but even if they aren’t, that doesn’t make me love my son any less. (Don’t believe me? Just try to mess with him and see what happens to you. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ)ย

So let’s stop judging each other based on some false expectation of what being “motherly” means. Love your kid the best way you know how. Besides, we’re all getting Mother’s Day gifts in the end… am I right? LOL!

And now, I leave you with a gift. This is called the “Jayden Turn Up”โ€” enjoy! ๐Ÿ˜€

(If you’re wondering, the background is a Christian hip-hop song called “Below Paradise” by Tedashii.)
